The Oluyole Local Government Area came alive today as the grand finale of the Seyi Makinde Cup drew students, political administrators, top government officials, sports lovers, and community leaders into a lively celebration of youth talent and community spirit.

The Council boss, Engr. Akeem Olatunji, in his brief remarks, commended organizers for the initiative, which he said afforded the local government to collaborate effectively in the successful outcome of the tournament.

 


 

 

While expressing gratitude to governor Seyi Makinde for providing local government administration with the enabling environment to explore and grow, Olatunji reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to stay focused on the implementation of Makinde’s economic blueprint of sustainable development at the grassroots.

The tournament closed on a high note with gripping matches and commendations from dignitaries across Oyo State.

The final match delivered the kind of energy the crowd hoped for. Progressive Day School, Odo Ona Nla, outclassed Ifelodun Community Basic School, Egbeda Tuba, with a confident 3–0 victory.

The team controlled the game from start to finish, sealing their place as champions of this year’s competition.

Earlier in the day, Olomi Community Basic School, Olomi, secured a solid 2–0 win over OLGC Basic School, Oke Ona Ikereku, to take the third position.

Their performance rounded off the top three standings and reflected the quality of play seen throughout the tournament.

The event also attracted several respected figures in sports, politics, and grassroots community development with a common message to the peopleThey all had one message in common which was deep appreciation for Engr. Akeem Olatunji’s commitment to nurturing young talent and strengthening grassroots sports development.

Those present included Comrade Femi Michael, State Chairman of NAPSGAST; Comrade Fatai Onibudo, NAPSGAST Ibadanland Chairman; Lateef Saheed, Oluyole NAPSGAST Chairman; Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports; Prince Adebowale Falana, Chairman of Oyo State Youth Agency Development; Alhaji Nasiru Hamzat, Chairman PDP Oyo State; Hon. Oyelami Joel, State Secretary of the PDP; Chief Kabiru Olajide, Baale of Oleyo; and the Vice Chairman of Oluyole LG, Hon. Niyi Akorede.

They applauded Engr. Olatunji’s initiative, noting that the Seyi Makinde Cup has grown into a platform that not only promotes sportsmanship among school children but also brings communities together.

Hon. Wasilat Adegoke described the tournament as impressive and urged other local governments to take a cue from Oluyole. She noted that Engr. Olatunji continues to excel both in governance and in political engagement.

Also, Comrade Femi Michael added that such an event had never been seen in the history of NAPSGAST calling it the first of its kind in Oyo State and praised Oluyole for its progressive approach.

Hon. Oyelami Joel, in his remark, encouraged party leaders in the local government to uphold peace and activities that deepens harmonious coexistence.

Reflecting on political developments within the LG, he said the governor’s agenda remains a unifying guide and that Engr. Olatunji has embraced it fully.

He also offered prayers for the Oluyole PDP Chairman, Elder Nasiru Hamzat, expressing confidence and optimism for political victories in 2027.

Prince Adebowale Falana, the Chairman of Oyo State Youth Development Agency, performed the ceremonial kickoff for the third-place match, while the PDP State General Secretary took the kickoff for the final.

Individual brilliance was also recognised. Awards were presented to young players who stood out and showed exceptional skills during the competition:

Best Goalkeeper: Nwode David, CRIN Staff School, Highest Goalscorer: Antony Daniel, CRIN Staff School, Best Player: Ibrahim Teslim, Ifelodun Community Basic School, Egbeda Tuba, while Most Valuable Player: Emmanuel John, OLGC Basic School, Oke Ona Ikereku

Their performances according to stakeholders, offered a glimpse into the promising future of grassroots football in the local government.

The event witnessed a wide range of participants including Hon. Lekan Bello, State Youth Leader; Hon. Lukman Salawu, former House of Assembly member; Hon. Kehinde Abore, former Chairman of Oluyole LG; Hon. Taofeek Azeez, Leader of the House; party leaders; head teachers from participating schools; councillors; supervisory councillors; special assistants; the SARSINO Ladies; and many others who came to cheer the children.
