Nigeria is set to deepen its drive towards local production of power equipment following strategic engagements between the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP) and TBEA, a leading Chinese power transmission and transformation company.
The development followed a visit by the NCSP Director-General, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, and his delegation to TBEA in Xinjiang, China, as part of efforts to attract strategic Chinese investments and accelerate priority projects under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

During the engagement, discussions focused on investment opportunities in Nigeria’s electricity sector, including power transmission, super grids, and mini- and micro-grid solutions aimed at addressing the country’s longstanding electricity challenges.
The engagement is significant because it moves beyond the traditional model of importing power infrastructure towards developing Nigeria’s capacity to produce critical power equipment locally, while creating opportunities for technology transfer, skills development, employment and industrial growth.
Tegbe’s investment drive is part of the broader mandate of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership to strengthen economic cooperation between both countries and attract major Chinese investments into Nigeria. The delegation has also engaged Chinese financial institutions, including the China EXIM Bank and China Development Bank, on innovative financing options for priority Nigerian projects.
With Nigeria’s electricity sector requiring substantial investment in transmission and distribution infrastructure, deeper collaboration with companies such as TBEA could provide access to advanced technologies and expertise while supporting the development of local manufacturing capacity.

The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader industrialisation agenda, particularly its focus on technology transfer, infrastructure development, job creation and reducing dependence on imported equipment.
If successfully translated into concrete investments, the TBEA engagement could represent an important step towards making Nigeria not only a consumer of power equipment, but also a manufacturer and potential regional supplier of critical electricity infrastructure.
