The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State, Adegboyega Taofeek Adegoke who is the Aare Egbe Omo Balogun of Ibadanland has pledged to ensure full autonomy for local government councils if elected governor, describing the policy as a critical step toward accelerating grassroots development across the state.
Adegoke made the commitment while addressing party supporters and stakeholders, emphasizing that empowering local governments would bring governance closer to the people and improve the delivery of essential services at the community level.
According to the ADC flagbearer, local councils remain the closest tier of government to the grassroots and should be allowed to operate independently without undue interference. He noted that granting financial and administrative autonomy to local governments would enable them to effectively identify and address the unique needs of their respective communities.

The governorship hopeful argued that local government autonomy would promote accountability, enhance transparency in the management of public resources, and create opportunities for sustainable development in rural and urban communities alike.

Adegoke further stated that his administration would prioritize policies aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring that funds allocated to local governments are utilized for projects that directly impact the lives of residents.
He maintained that grassroots development remains central to his vision for Oyo State, adding that empowering local governments would stimulate economic growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance the overall welfare of citizens.
The ADC candidate called on residents of the state to support his vision of a people-centered government, assuring them of his commitment to inclusive governance, transparency, and equitable development across all parts of Oyo State.

Political observers have described the renewed debate on local government autonomy as a significant issue ahead of future elections, with many stakeholders advocating greater independence for councils to effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities.
