As the world marks World Football Day 2026, the Accord Party aspirant for Oyo Central Senatorial District, Hon. Wale Ajani-OSHAPRAPRA, has reaffirmed his commitment to promoting grassroots football as a tool for youth empowerment, peace, unity and community development.

In his message to commemorate the day, Hon. Ajani described football as more than a sport, saying it is a global language that connects people across age, religion, culture, politics and social status.

According to him, Oyo Central is blessed with talented young footballers who only need proper support, exposure, training facilities and structured opportunities to become stars.

“From the streets to the stadiums, our youths deserve a platform to showcase their talents. Football can take many young people away from idleness, crime and drug abuse, and place them on the path of discipline, teamwork and greatness,” he said.

Hon. Ajani noted that the United Nations’ recognition of May 25 as World Football Day is a reminder that football can be used to promote peace, development, inclusion, health and the empowerment of women and girls.

He said communities across Oyo Central, including Akinyele, Afijio, Atiba, Egbeda, Lagelu, Ogo Oluwa, Oluyole, Ona-Ara, Oyo East, Oyo West and Surulere, have young people with great football potential waiting to be discovered.

The Accord aspirant pledged to support initiatives that will strengthen local football development through ward-based competitions, school sports revival, coaching clinics, talent discovery programmes and rehabilitation of community playing fields.

He also stressed the importance of female football development, saying girls must be encouraged and supported to participate actively in sports and pursue their dreams without limitation.

Hon. Ajani added that football development can also boost the local economy by creating opportunities for coaches, referees, sports vendors, event organizers, media practitioners, medical personnel and small business owners.

“As we celebrate World Football Day 2026, we must see football as a serious development tool. It is not only about playing matches; it is about building confidence, creating jobs, promoting peace and giving hope to our young people,” he stated.

He called on traditional rulers, community leaders, schools, football associations, private organizations and youth groups to work together in building a stronger grassroots football structure across Oyo Central.

Hon. Wale Ajani-OSHAPRAPRA reaffirmed that, if given the opportunity to serve, he will continue to champion policies and programmes that promote youth development, sports advancement and community unity.

“Oyo Central has the talent, the energy and the passion. What we need is leadership that understands how to turn these gifts into opportunities. Through football, we can build stronger youths, stronger communities and a stronger future,” he concluded.
