Panic and unrest broke out in the early hours of September 8, 2025, following a violent raid on a residence at No. 15, Bode Kumapayi Street, Iwo Road, Ibadan, where two men were allegedly caught engaging in a same-sex relationship.

The victims, identified as Qudus Adegoke, a tenant in the building, and his friend, Adeniyi Gbenga, were reportedly apprehended during the raid carried out by suspected members of a local Sharia enforcement group at about 6:23 a.m.

According to eyewitnesses, the operatives forcefully entered the residence and found the two men in a private setting before dragging them outside.

They were allegedly beaten and subjected to public ridicule as the operatives called on residents to witness the scene.

The situation escalated quickly as members of the community and suspected miscreants joined in the assault. Some individuals reportedly took photographs and circulated them on social media, intensifying the humiliation of the victims.

“It was a very disturbing scene. People gathered in large numbers, and before long, it turned into mob action,” said a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The chairman of the community landlords’ association, who intervened during the incident, condemned the escalation of violence.

“We do not support taking laws into one’s hands. Regardless of the allegations, such matters should be handled by the appropriate authorities.

That was why I immediately contacted the police,” he said.
Following the intervention, officers from Bankesa Police Station, Olodo, arrived at the scene and took the two men into custody.

A police source who spoke to The Populist News confirmed the arrest and subsequent bail of the suspects.

“They were brought in for questioning, and statements were taken. They were later granted bail with sureties while investigations are ongoing.

The case may be charged to court upon conclusion of our findings,” the officer stated.
The police further warned against mob justice and unlawful enforcement activities.

“No individual or group has the right to assault or publicly humiliate suspects. Such actions are punishable under the law,” the source added.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions within the community, with some residents expressing concern over moral conduct, while others criticized the resort to violence and public shaming.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the development has led to further repercussions for those involved, including social backlash and housing-related issues.

As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Police Command has not issued an official public statement regarding the incident.
