In response to the pressing issues faced by the market users of Akesan Market, I, Hon. Olorunpoto Cephas Rahaman, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and the Honourable representing Oyo East/Oyo West State Constituency at the Oyo State House of Assembly, wish to address the concerns raised by the market men and women.
It has been brought to my attention that the market users have been protesting the lack of power supply to their shops, despite promises made during the market’s construction phase.
The Chairman of Oyo East Local Government, Mr. Saheed Arowosaye, suggested that the market people should undertake the connections themselves, which not only raises safety concerns but also contradicts the principles of proper government resource management.
Moreover, the absence of access to water within the market premises is deeply regrettable. In response to this critical issue, I am taking immediate action to alleviate the situation.
I will personally provide a generating set to power the borehole system, ensuring consistent access to water for regular usage and toilet facilities at the market.
Upon thorough investigation, it has been revealed that the electrification aspect of the market construction was supposed to be carried out by the Local Government directly, against the provisions of the Bill of engineering measurement for the construction of Akesan ultramodern market.
However, this obligation has not been fulfilled even after three years, leading to understandable dissatisfaction among the market users.
As the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and Honourable representing the constituents of Oyo East/Oyo West State Constituency, I am deeply committed to addressing these concerns and ensuring the responsible management of government resources.
The Oyo State House of Assembly will actively engage with the management of Oyo East Local Government to rectify this situation promptly and thoroughly investigate any discrepancies.
It is of utmost importance that the safety and well-being of the market users are prioritized, and we will spare no effort in ensuring that access to electricity and water is provided in accordance with the construction plan and regulations.
While also extending our heartfelt gratitude to Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde for his unwavering support and prompt action in the swift reconstruction of Akesan Market after the tragic inferno in January 2020.
The Governor’s decisive leadership and commitment to revitalizing our local economy have been instrumental in restoring hope and prosperity to our community.
The reconstruction of Akesan Market not only demonstrates the government’s responsiveness to the needs of its citizens but also signifies a significant milestone in our collective journey towards sustainable economic growth and development in Oyo State.
I commend Governor Makinde for his dedication and proactive approach in ensuring the swift recovery and rejuvenation of our beloved market.
I urge all stakeholders to collaborate in resolving these pressing matters swiftly for the benefit of the Akesan Market community.
