In the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Governor Seyi Makinde’s unwavering commitment to religious harmony and unity shines brightly as the Omi-tuntun Central Mosque celebrates her 10th year anniversary.
A Beacon of Harmony: Omi-tuntun Central Mosque’s Decade-Long Journey
Ten years ago, on January 6, 2014, the foundation stone of Omi-tuntun Central Mosque was laid, marking the inception of a symbol of religious unity in Oyo State.
The mosque, commissioned by Engr Seyi Makinde, who would later become the Governor of Oyo State in 2019, stands as a testament to the Governor’s profound belief in Allah’s creed, dedication to fostering religious harmony and promoting piety which transcends personal beliefs for greater good.
Governor Seyi Makinde, a devout Christian, has consistently demonstrated an exemplary commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence among various religious communities. This unique trait was evident right from the establishment of the Omi-tuntun Central Mosque which showcases the Governor’s respect for mutuality and love for diverse religious practices.
Sustaining Religious Harmony Through Actions: A Remarkable Journey
Beyond the initial commissioning, Governor Seyi Makinde has continually invested in the maintenance and improvement of the mosque, ensuring that it remains a place of worship that adheres to the highest standards. The commitment to facilitating a smooth worship experience extends to the provision of necessary materials for the congregation.
The annual Ramadan lectures organized by the mosque further emphasizes Governor Makinde’s commitment to nurturing an environment of understanding and respect for diverse religious beliefs. The Ramadan Tafseers, not only guide the Muslim faithful on the best path of Islamic practice but also promote values of sabr, leadership, and community building.
Governor Makinde, through the Omi-tuntun Central Mosque, has sponsored numerous Ummah on Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca which has helped them in fulfilling an important part of their deen. Alhaji Abdulmojeed Lanase, serving as the Imam since the commissioning, has played very important roles in promoting the ideals and virtues that birthed the mosque.
Governor Makinde’s Personal Investments in Religious Harmony
The Governor’s commitment to religious harmony extends beyond Omi-tuntun Central Mosque with the construction of a new imposing and magnificent worship center, Organisation of Tadhamunul Muslimeen Mosque, Adogba, Iwo Road, Ibadan.
The State Of the Art Islamic Center which also has a unique Madrassah & College built personally by the Governor was commissioned by the Amirul Mumeen Of Nigeria, His Eminence Sheikh Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar with the support of the Emir of Kano; His Highness Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, The Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta States; His Eminence Alhaji Dawud Makanjuola Akinola and other great Islamic leaders across the nation.
This act of generosity underscores Governor Makinde’s belief in the importance of supporting religious diversity and providing spaces for spiritual growth.
Even before his tenure as the state’s helmsman, Governor Makinde’s personal contributions to different religious communities have been noteworthy.
These actions showcase a leader who understands the significance of unity in diversity, transcending religious affiliations for the collective progress of Oyo State.
A Grand Decade: Celebrating the Legacy of Omi-tuntun Central Mosque
The Omi-tuntun Central Mosque’s decade-long journey represents not just a physical structure but a symbol of Governor Seyi Makinde’s enduring vision for religious harmony in Oyo State.
