As part of its global commitment to environmental stewardship, Rotary International has launched a tree-planting initiative in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. This event is part of the broader efforts to support one of Rotary’s key areas of focus: “Supporting the Environment.” The project addresses pressing environmental issues such as deforestation and urbanization, which negatively impact health, alter weather patterns, disrupt habitats, and contribute to food insecurity.
The Rotary International President for 2024-2025, Stephanie Urchick, has called on Rotarians and partners worldwide to embody “The Magic of Rotary” by actively participating in environmental initiatives. Urchick emphasized the importance of tackling environmental challenges, noting that these efforts can lead to significant improvements in air quality, provide essential shade, and engage communities in environmental conservation.
In line with this vision, Rotary District 9126, through its Committee for Support of the Environment, inaugurated the tree-planting project in Ibadan today.
The event was spearheaded by District Governor Rotarian Kayode Olowolagba, accompanied by District Governor Nominee Rotarian Olaniyi Okin, District Executive Secretary Rotarian Kazeem Oderinu, Rotarian (Oba) Gbenga Adeoye, and other members of the State Committee, including Past Assistant Governor Adesokan Adewale, Rotarian Kazeem Olanrewaju, and Rotarian Awotiku.
The tree-planting ceremony, held at Basorun Ogunmola High School, was attended by Rotarians from various clubs, including Rotary E-club of One Nigeria, Rotary Club of Iyaganku Ibadan, Rotary Club of Ibadan Ring Road, Rotary Club of Ibadan Pathfinder, Rotary Club of Challenge, and Rotary Club of Oluyole Estate Ibadan. The school’s Vice Principal for Administration, Mrs. Adediji, warmly received the District Governor and the organizing team.
Rotarian Ismail Lawal, Chair of the Oyo State Committee, expressed his gratitude to the District Governor, the planning committee led by District Chair Rotarian Seun Agboola, and all Rotarians who contributed to the success of the event.
This initiative marks a significant step in Rotary’s ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of environmental degradation and foster a healthier planet for future generations.
