The countdown to Nigeria’s 2027 general elections is entering a new phase as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced October 9, 2026 as the commencement date for the nationwide collection of newly issued Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
The announcement was made by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, during the commission’s North-West Zonal Interactive Meeting and Readiness Assessment in Kaduna.
The development comes after the recent Continuous Voter Registration exercise, which INEC said produced 10,772,421 new registrations, subject to biometric verification.
The commission has also called for the removal of bottlenecks that could delay PVC distribution at the local government level and prevent eligible citizens from participating in the elections.
With the collection date now approaching, registered voters who participated in the registration exercise, transferred their voter information or requested replacement of lost or damaged cards are being reminded to prepare for collection at their designated centres.
INEC’s voter portal also allows registered voters to check their PVC status and locate their collection centre.
The commission is simultaneously intensifying preparations for the 2027 elections.
According to INEC, efforts include improving voter-verification and result-transmission systems, strengthening result management and adopting what it describes as a “Zero-Failure” approach to election logistics.
The official election calendar currently places the Presidential and National Assembly elections on January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027
As October 9 draws closer, the message is simple: check your voter status, confirm your collection centre and make arrangements to collect your PVC when the exercise begins.
For millions of Nigerians, the PVC represents more than a card, it is the means through which an eligible citizen participates in the electoral process.
