Oyo State generated ₦406.9 billion in recurrent revenue in the first half of 2026, representing 91.2 per cent of its target for the period, just as it expended ₦345.7 billion, which is 77.5 per cent of its expenditure target for the first six months of the year.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Musibau Babatunde, disclosed this in Ibadan while presenting the 2026 Half-Year Budget Implementation Report on Revenue and Expenditure to stakeholders at the Local Government Staff Training School, Secretariat, Agodi.
Prof. Babatunde also announced that the government will soon take delivery of 50 electric buses to improve public transportation and reduce commuting costs for residents.
He explained that the budget performance review across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies was aimed at assessing revenue generation and expenditure, while identifying areas requiring greater government attention.
He added that the review also covered projects nominated by residents during town hall meetings, noting that while some projects have commenced, others will begin before year-end.
Responding to a question on the higher budget allocation to infrastructure and education, Prof. Babatunde emphasized that projects in other sectors often overlap with these major sectors, making the allocation necessary.
He said, “The review is to track the 2026 budget, to measure achievements in revenue and expenditure, and to explore ways of improving Oyo State’s fiscal sustainability.
This will enable the government to channel more resources into sectors that need greater support, ensuring better budget performance.”
He further noted: “As part of Governor Seyi Makinde’s promises during the state’s 50th anniversary celebration, Oyo will soon take delivery of 50 electric buses.
These will be distributed across local government areas, while others will serve inter-city and intra-city routes, helping to reduce transportation costs.”
In his opening remarks, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Barr. Ayobami Ojo, attributed the strong budget performance to prudent financial management, improved revenue mobilization, and the dedication of public servants.
He highlighted that the 2026 budget was developed through a participatory process guided by global best practices.
Ojo commended Governor Makinde for supporting institutional reforms that have positioned Oyo as one of Nigeria’s leading sub-national governments in transparency and accountable financial management.
He stressed that the budget performance presentation reflects the Governor’s commitment to keeping citizens informed on how public resources are mobilized and spent.
Delivering her goodwill message, the Head of Service, Dr. (Mrs.) Adenike Fasina, mni, said the mid-year report was necessary to evaluate progress on the 2026 Appropriation Act.
She urged revenue ministries to block leakages and ensure transparency in their operations.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Tunde Ayanleke, assured that subsequent quarters would prioritize basic education and primary healthcare.
He emphasized that the budget monitoring committee will continue monthly reviews to ensure desired results.
In their goodwill messages, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Gafar Bello; President, Multidisciplinary Financial Professionals, Dr. (Prince) Oyebade Oyedepo, FCA; and Head of Democracy and Governance, Justice, Development and Peace Commission, Mr. Jide Bamgbose, commended the government for involving stakeholders in the budget process.

Makinde advocates stronger partnership between government, faith institutions for better Nigeria
Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has called for stronger collaboration between government and faith institutions to build a just, peaceful, and opportunity-driven Nigeria.
The Governor made the call on Wednesday while declaring open the 50th/15th Biennial 2026 Conference of the Methodist Church Nigeria, held at Bashmor Event Center, Ibadan. He commended the Church for its contributions to education, healthcare, community development, and moral values.
Governor Makinde emphasized that nations are not built by governments alone, but also by institutions that shape values, strengthen families, and inspire hope.
Reflecting on the Bible text for the conference theme, Exodus 14:14, he noted that while the scripture reminds believers that confidence rests in God, it also places responsibility on leaders to ensure fairness, truth, peace, and equal opportunity for all, regardless of background.
He stated that in Oyo State, the focus has been on development that improves the lives of ordinary people, stressing that Nigeria does not lack talent or resources but requires leadership that unites citizens around a common purpose and prioritizes service above self.
Governor Makinde also used the occasion to restate his intention to run for President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2027, pledging to provide leadership that fosters unity. He solicited the support and prayers of the church, affirming that with faith in God and collective commitment, “our best days as a nation are still ahead.”
Recalling his personal history with the venue, the Governor noted that he had prayed at the same location in 2018 for God’s will to be established regarding his governorship ambition. He said the Methodist Conference provided him the opportunity to offer a similar prayer concerning his presidential bid.
Governor Makinde remarked: “Let me begin by thanking the Methodist Church for its enduring contribution to our nation. For well over a century, this church has not only preached the gospel but has invested in education, healthcare, community development, and the moral formation of generations of Nigerians.
“In Oyo State, our vision has never been simply to complete projects, but to build a society where people can live with dignity, pursue opportunity, and have confidence in tomorrow. That same aspiration is one we all share for Nigeria. Our nation does not lack talent. It does not lack resources.
What Nigeria needs now more than ever is leadership that brings people together around a common purpose and the courage to place service above self.
“It is no secret that I am running to be the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and this is the type of leadership I will offer if given the opportunity to serve. I use this opportunity to solicit your support, and I am confident that with faith in God and commitment from all of us, our best days as a nation are still ahead. Delivering his address on the conference theme, “I Will Fight for You”, the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Dr. Oliver Ali Aba (JP), urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to secure lives and property against banditry, kidnapping, inflation, and other challenges. He commended the Federal Government, Oyo State Government, and security agencies for rescuing abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
The Prelate enjoined Nigerians to be more prayerful, seeking God’s mercy, grace, justice, and prosperity for the nation. He further admonished governments at all levels to be proactive in addressing insecurity and to desist from paying ransom to kidnappers.
