The ancient city of Ibadan and Nigeria’s media community have been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned journalist, public relations expert, and the Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Lekan Alabi, who passed away at the age of 76.
The Olubadan Palace confirmed his passing in a statement signed by the Media Aide to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Mr. Adeola Oloko. According to the statement, the respected elder statesman died in the early hours of Saturday, August 1, 2026, in Lagos after a brief illness.
Chief Alabi was widely celebrated for his remarkable contributions to journalism, public communication, and the advancement of Ibadanland.
Throughout his distinguished career, he served with excellence as Chief Press Secretary to several former Governors of Oyo State, earning widespread respect for his professionalism, integrity, eloquence, and exceptional understanding of governance and public affairs.
Family sources disclosed that burial arrangements have been concluded, and the late media icon will be laid to rest on Sunday, August 2, 2026, in accordance with Islamic rites. Further details of the funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
Chief Lekan Alabi was regarded as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished journalists and government communicators.
