In recognition of his pivotal contributions to educational reform and legislative excellence, the Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, representing the good people of Atiba State Constituency, Hon. Gbenga Joseph Oyekola, has been honored with the Outstanding Legislative Performance and Education Support Award.

The award was presented as part of the 2025 Teachers’ Day celebration, held at the Civic Center, in Ibadan Oyo State capital, today.

Hon. Oyekola received the accolade for his historic motion advocating the extension of teachers’ years of service from 35 to 40 years, and their retirement age from 60 to 65 years.

 




 

This legislative milestone has been widely applauded by education stakeholders across the state and beyond.

Presenting the award, the organizers praised Hon. Oyekola’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of teachers and the promotion of quality education.

They noted that his motion has not only given hope to thousands of educators but has also positioned Oyo State as a forerunner in progressive education policy in Nigeria.

In his acceptance speech, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola expressed gratitude for the recognition, dedicating the award to all teachers in Oyo State.

“This honor is not just for me, but for every educator whose passion and dedication continue to shape the future of our children.

Our teachers deserve the best, and I will continue to advocate policies that reflect their value in society,” he said.

He commended the teachers’ for their spirit of unity, foresight in transforming the Pacesetter State education policy. Oyekola specifically lauded the SUBEB Chairman, Dr. Nureni Adeniran in implementing the sustainable development legacy of His Excellency Engr ‘Seyi Makinde FNSE.

The Lawmaker further dedicated the award to the State Assembly and the executive arms of government in Oyo State for implementing the UNESCO percentage on education policy.

The event, which brought together educationists, government officials, and civil society leaders, also served as a platform to highlight the challenges and achievements within the education sector, emphasizing the need for sustained legislative support.
