Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo Federal Constituency have called on Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, to intervene in the ongoing crisis within the party’s chapter in the constituency.

The appeal was made during a meeting held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, under the chairmanship of Rt. Hon. Moroof Olawale Atilola.

The stakeholders identified several factors fueling the crisis, including the lopsided distribution of political appointments, anti-party activities, excessive centralization of power, and non-compliance with the party’s constitution.

In their resolution, they reaffirmed their support for Governor Makinde as the party’s leader and urged him to decentralize power, ensure inclusivity, and address other pressing issues affecting the PDP in the constituency.

Furthermore, the stakeholders called for the recognition of Rt. Hon. Moroof Olawale Atilola as the leader of the PDP in Oyo Federal Constituency, citing his unifying leadership and commitment to democratic principles.

They also appealed to Governor Makinde to consider their proposals as lasting solutions to strengthen the party’s structure and enhance its prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The stakeholders emphasized that the emergence of a leader by proxy has worsened the situation, hindering the party’s progress in the constituency.

URGENT NEED TO RESCUE, REVIVE, AND STRENGTHEN PDP IN OYO FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY

A communiqué issued at the PDP Stakeholders’ Meeting of Oyo Federal Constituency held on March 22, 2025, under the chairmanship of Rt. Hon. Moroof Olawale Atilola.

We, the undersigned stalwarts and stakeholders of the PDP in Oyo Federal Constituency—comprising AFIJIO, ATIBA, OYO EAST, and OYO WEST—have identified key factors contributing to the ongoing crisis, which threaten the party’s unity and electoral success:

  • Lopsided distribution of political appointments and slots.
  • Anti-party activities by some leaders.
  • Excessive centralization of power, leading to marginalization, oppression, and suppression of voices.
  • Dysfunctional party organs that have become inactive.
  • Non-compliance with the party’s constitution and lack of harmonization in decision-making, especially during the last local government elections.
  • Lack of proper communication and transparency due to excessive power concentration in the hands of a few.

Resolutions:

After extensive deliberations, we resolve as follows:

  1. The PDP remains our only political party, and our undisputed leader is His Excellency, Engr. Oluwaseyi Abiodun Makinde, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, to whom we pledge unwavering support.
  2. We appreciate Governor Makinde’s unwavering commitment to ensuring peace and unity within the PDP in Oyo Federal Constituency through his Special Assistant on Oyo Federal Constituency Matters.
  3. Immediate decentralization of power within the Oyo Federal Constituency PDP to allow for inclusive participation.
  4. Refund of nomination form fees to party aspirants who were unfairly deprived of participation.
  5. Replacement of the South-West PDP EXCO with representatives from the party’s mainstream structure.
  6. Recognition of Rt. Hon. Moroof Olawale Atilola—a two-time former Speaker and current Chairman of the Oyo State Scholarship Board—as the PDP leader in Oyo Federal Constituency. His leadership team should comprise young, vibrant, and energetic representatives from all four local government areas for an inclusive and democratic administration of the party.
  7. The practice of appointing leaders by proxy has been detrimental to the party’s progress, fueling division rather than fostering unity. The PDP in Oyo Federal Constituency needs a leader with a unifying force, not a divisive one.

Appeal to Governor Makinde:

We earnestly appeal to our progressive and result-driven Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Abiodun Oluwaseyi Makinde, to consider our recommendations as lasting solutions that will reposition the PDP in Oyo Federal Constituency and ensure we continue enjoying good governance under his leadership.

All committed members of the PDP in Oyo Federal Constituency are united in reviving and rescuing the party from the brink of collapse, which has been caused by high-handedness, betrayal, favoritism, misinformation, oppression, and open confrontations.
