Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, has triumphed in the Edo State governorship election held on Saturday.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on Sunday that Okpebholo secured a total of 291,667 votes across the 18 local government areas (LGAs).
His closest competitor, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), received 247,655 votes.
Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, placed third with 22,763 votes.
With these results, Okpebholo is poised to be officially declared the winner of the election.
In the meantime, the PDP in Edo has urged INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to review the election results before the final declaration. Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, PDP Chairman in Edo, stated in Benin on Sunday that the results recorded by electoral officers differed significantly from those uploaded on INEC’s IREV at the polling units.
He claimed that the votes had been inflated in favor of the APC by deducting votes from the PDP.
