The city of Ibadan is undergoing a remarkable transformation, thanks to the visionary leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde. At the heart of this transformation is the state government’s emphasis on road infrastructure development, which has emerged as a catalyst for economic growth and prosperity.
Governor Makinde has prioritized the rehabilitation and construction of roads across the state, recognizing the critical role that good road networks play in facilitating economic activity. The results are already manifesting, with Ibadan experiencing a surge in economic activity, driven by improved access to markets, reduced transportation costs, and increased investor confidence.
One of the flagship projects of the Makinde administration is the reconstruction of the Airport road, a critical artery that connects the city to the proposed international airport. This project has not only improved the aesthetic appeal of the city but has also reduced travel time and increased the flow of traffic, making it easier for businesses to operate and for residents to access essential services.
Residents of Oyo State will be heartened to learn that Governor Seyi Makinde has made significant strides in road infrastructure development. While there is still work to be done, the completion of 335.77 kilometers of roads across the state is a remarkable achievement, exceeding the total road construction accomplished by all governors from 1999 to 2019. This feat demonstrates Governor Makinde’s unwavering commitment to infrastructure growth.
In a move to accelerate socioeconomic progress and enhance the quality of life for its citizens, the Oyo State Government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, has embarked on a comprehensive road rehabilitation project in Ibadan. This ambitious initiative targets the city’s deteriorated road network, aiming to improve connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and generate job opportunities for the local community.
It is crucial to acknowledge the vital importance of road infrastructure in stimulating economic growth and social development. By connecting the hinterlands to key economic centers, road infrastructure attracts new capital, boosts productivity, and increases output, while also reducing production costs. Furthermore, it plays a critical role in linking people and places, enhancing access to healthcare, education, and other essential services. As experts point out, a 10% increase in road infrastructure can result in a significant 5.16% decline in poverty, underscoring its potential to drive meaningful change.
With his unique touch, Governor Seyi Makinde is skillfully addressing the intricate challenges facing the state, always putting the people’s interests first. Governor Makinde is cognizant of the importance of road infrastructure in stimulating economic growth. As such, he launched an ambitious road development program upon assuming office in 2019, aiming to leverage improved infrastructure to attract investments and boost the state’s revenue. Notably, Governor Makinde deviated from the conventional approach by starting his road development initiatives outside of Ibadan, the state capital. This deliberate decision was guided by a key factor.
Governor Makinde’s road construction strategy was informed by data and logic. He began by linking the state’s production zones to the state capital, Ibadan. The first project was the Moniya-Iseyin road, a federal road in poor condition. Despite the challenges, the Governor’s administration completed the repairs in record time less than 20 months. A 20-year warranty and a significant reduction in travel time between Ibadan and the Oke-Ogun zone now under 50 minutes.
The road rehabilitation project is poised to revolutionize Ibadan’s socioeconomic landscape, bringing about significant improvements in the quality of life for its residents. Recalled that in December 2023, Governor Makinde approved the reconstruction and asphalt improvement of 95.58 kilometers of roads in Ibadan. The first phase, totaling 38.48 kilometers, was successfully commissioned on July 11, 2024.
