Oyo State House of Assembly Chief Whip, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, Calls for Immediate Action on Murder of Ajayi Crowther University Student

At today’s plenary session of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Chief Whip Hon. Gbenga Joseph Oyekola moved a motion of urgent importance concerning the brutal torture and murder of Alexander Timilehin, a 200-level Mechanical Engineering student at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo.

The motion, titled “Urgent Need for Government Action Regarding the Torture and Murder of Alexander, a 200 Level Engineering Student at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo,” highlights the grievous incident that occurred on May 25, 2024.

Alexander was found dead after being subjected to severe physical abuse, allegedly as part of a practice known as “Maximum Sisi” or “Scientific Maximum Sisi” – a form of jungle justice involving public humiliation and caning.

Hon. Oyekola, representing Atiba State Constituency, emphasized the shock and fear that have gripped the university community and the wider state following this tragic event.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Alexander was last seen leaving the university library late in the evening, and his body was discovered by university security the next morning.

The motion condemned the heinous act and called for immediate and decisive action to address the safety and security lapses within the university.

The motion specifically called for the following actions:

  1. Condemnation and Condolences: Extend condolences to Alexander’s family, the student body, and the Ajayi Crowther University community.
  2. Collaboration for Security Review: Urge the Executive Arm of Government, through the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, to collaborate with university authorities to review and enhance campus security protocols.
  3. Expedited Investigation: Call on the Oyo State Police Command to expedite their investigation, apprehend those responsible, and ensure justice is served without delay.
  4. Establishment of Campus Security Task Force: Recommend the establishment of a dedicated campus security task force comprising university security personnel, local law enforcement, and student representatives to monitor and address security issues.

The motion underscores the need for the government to demonstrate its commitment to student safety and prevent future tragedies. The Chief Whip’s call to action aims to restore confidence in the safety of educational institutions in Oyo State.

The Speaker of the House acknowledged the motion and emphasized the urgency of addressing the security concerns raised.

The Assembly resolved to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of students and prevent such incidents from occurring again.
