It was a black Monday yesterday 25th September, 2023 for the people of Akanran village of Ona Ara Local Government in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State as another herdsmen attack of early morning claimed the life of a 60 year old Farmer.
It was garnered that the herdsmen moved their cattle to the farmland for grazing which the farmers resisted vehemently.
According to a surviving farmer, Mr Olosunde who also sustained multiple injury; he said the herdsmen started shooting when they resisted them from grazing on their Farmland.
He told our correspondent that the Monday 25th of September,2023 is the fourth attack on their Farmland by herdsmen this year alone
That previous grazing was resisted and reported to the security agency but no arrest has been made.
Though, Mr Olosunde claimed that no life was lost on previous attack but many of their members (Farmers ) sustained different degrees of injury untill this last one that cost the life of one Mr Olabode Olalekan.
At the time of filling this report, the corpse of the deceased has been deposited to the Mortuary of University College Hospital (UCH), Agodi, Ibadan.
Conversely, the herdsmen left the farm with injury after Olabode was gunned down. But they came back in the night to attack and raze down buildings in that community where the Farmers predominantly lived.
Assets worth millions of naira were lost. According to the Chairman of Ogundepo Landlord Association; the prompt intervention of the Nigeria police from Ogbere division to his call brought normalcy to the area, which averted further loss of lives.
Our efforts to get Family of the deceased ( Olabode Olalekan) at their Family house was abortive as many of them has fled for safety.
Our correspondent was able to reach head of the Family of the deceased; Chief Olaosebikan Olabode. He expressed that the death of his Brother was a colossal loss to the entire Olabode Family.
He mentioned that the deceased Children in Nigeria and her Daughter abroad earnestly want justice over the gruesome murder of their Father.
We tried reaching his Daughter living abroad via the WhatsApp number gotten from the Family Head but She did not pick her call.
Every efforts to speak with the Children living in Nigeria also proof abortive as none of them is willing to grant any interview from our correspondent.
Through telephone conversation with the DCO; Ogbere Divisional Headquarter of the Nigeria Police, he promised that investigation is on and those perpetrator will be prosecuted. And some of the Cattles met on the Farmland were taken to their office with few arrest.
Also, he said the injured resident and Farmers were receiving medical treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
We hope that anti-grazing law in the state will be enforced through proper engagement of the stakeholders i.e the Farmers, Herdsmen, Community Heads, Security Agencies and the Judiciary for a lasting peaceful coexistence.
